CEO of Superfresh parent is out, say reports

Sam Martin is out as CEO of Superfresh's parent company, two supermarket trade publications reported Friday.

Food Trade News and Supermarket News reported that Gregory Mays will serve as interim CEO of Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., which owns Superfresh, Pathmark, Food Emporium, Food Basics and the flagship A&P.

Martin had been in the position for less than four years, overseeing a bankruptcy reorganization and the closure of 100 stores. A&P is based in Montvale, N.J. Emerging from bankruptcy, A&P was financed with private equity funding.

In a statement, the company thanked Martin for the time he spent running the organization. “We thank Sam for all his time at A&P and wish him well in his future endeavours. At the appropriate time in the company’s 2014 planning process, a new chief executive officer will be identified,” the company said in a statement.
