The country's pineapple industry has tremendous potential for further development and expansion following high demand from foreign markets, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Therefore, he said the government was now in the process of expanding the cultivation of pineapple nationwide and increase pineapple exports to overseas markets. The country's target for pineapple plantations by 2020 was 22,589 hectares (ha) compared with 15,649ha last year.

"Malaysia's export value of the pineapple industry last year was RM110.5 million and the main importing countries for fresh pineapples are Singapore and Middle East countries. When it come to canned pineapple, the biggest importer is Japan and the United States," he said during the launch of 'Pineapple Fiesta' at Menara Kuala Lumpur here Friday.

Ismail Sabri said Malaysia had set a target to improve its position today as the 15th pineapple producer worldwide and third in Southeast Asia after Thailand and the Philippines. "Awareness must be improved among the farming community that pineapple cultivation not only provides high returns but is also low-risk for disease infection or get spoiled. The farmers are also given assistance in the form of fertiliser, seedlings and hormone," he said.
