Tennessee spends $3 million to get kids excited about fresh produce

Tennessee is giving out $3 million in taxpayer money to get children excited about eating fruits and vegetables. Sarah White, Tennessee’s director of school nutrition, believes the money will help make healthy food more appealing to many of the State’s elementary students.

The US Department of Agriculture has awarded Tennessee $3.3 million to administer the program. Tennessee education officials will allocate that money to 159 schools in 29 qualifying districts with high rates of students in the free and reduced lunch program. Students will receive a fresh fruit or vegetable during the school day — in addition to their regular meal.

In the news release, White said: “Those same students then go home and tell their parents about the fresh fruit or vegetable they tried at school. This program not only exposes students to fresh food; it exposes entire families.”
