Kees Oskam:

"Not too much available on top fruit market"

It is rather thin on the top fruit market at the moment. "There is hardly any assortment left. As far as pears are concerned small quantities are sold every day. That will still last for a short while, but the volumes are no longer massive any more," Kees Oskam says. "We will in any case be without Conference pears for about six or seven weeks shortly. Last year this was ten days and now it is fifty."

According to the top fruit dealer, sales of Jonagold are difficult. "Prices are under pressure, especially for the small sizes. Demand from the export markets is minimal and there is a lot of pressure on the price. As far as that is concerned the expectations are not likely to become true. Sales of the Golden Delicious are doing well. There is both demand from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia and Germany. The Elstar season may be regarded as ended."

"A total lack of apples and pears is not the case, but the alternative is expensive import fruit from countries such as Argentina, Chile and New Zealand and not the local Dutch fruit," Kees continues. Looking ahead at the coming Dutch season he expects a decent harvest. "As I look at it now I do not expect a plentiful harvest. The volumes will be larger than last season, but certainly not as large as in harvest year 2011. This should lead to a good balance between supply and demand."
