Netherlands: Apple and pear harvest is showing recovery

There will be a decent apple harvest this year, despite the cold Spring. There is less frost damage in comparison with last year, which means a slightly larger apple harvest. The difference with 2012 is larger with pears, because the pear trees were heavier hit by the frost in 2012 than apples. The estimated harvest is 297 million kilo of apples and 266 million kilo of pears, compared to 281 million kilo of apples and 199 million kilo of pears in 2012.

Most varieties have had problems with the settlement due to the cold weather during the blooming period. Picking will occur a lot later than usual this year. The expectation is that the harvest will be of good quality.

The largest difference to last year can be seen with pears. This is mostly due to the extremely small harvest in 2012. Around 34% more pears are expected this year compared to last, but that is still 21% less than in 2011. The estimate for Conference, which is by far the largest variety, will come to 220 million kilos. That is 37% more than in 2012 and 15% less than in 2011.

The harvest for apples is estimated at 5% higher than in 2012 and 30% lower than in 2011. The estimate for the apple variety Elstar is 3% higher than last year. It is expected that 11% more of the Jonagold variety (including Jonagored) will be harvested. The only large apple variety where a lower harvest is expected is the Golden Delicious. The harvest expectations for the so-called club varieties (Kanzi, Junami, Rubens and Wellant) are positive when compared to 2012. Only the Kanzi and Wellant are expected to have a larger harvest than in 2011.
