NZ: Gold kiwifruit harvest smaller than expected

The gold kiwifruit harvest in New Zealand has now been completed and, though final figures are yet to be reckoned, it seems that it may have been even lower than Zespri expected.

Zespri CEO, Lain Jager, said in March, prior to the harvest, that gold volumes would be around half of what they were in 2011. He said he anticipated somewhere in the region of 13 to 15 million trays.

Zespri spokeswoman Rachel Lynch has now said volumes were expected to be 12 to 13 million trays.

Volumes are expected to reach 2011 levels again, one the replacement Gold3 vines have come into production in the future.
