Tamil Nadu pins hopes on jackfruit cultivation

Whilst the whole of Tamil Nadu is reeling under drought and farmers are worried about the economic crisis, growers in Cuddalore are reaping a handsome harvest all thanks to jackfruit farming.

The merits of jackfruit farming have been realised by farmers in various districts, including Thanjavur and Cuddalore. Jackfruit farmer Sundaram Sabesan from Maharajapuram village, in Thanjavur district, has 20 jackfruit trees. He earns more than Rs 1 lakh every year.

Jackfruit farming is the best alternative for many challenges the economy faces today. The tree requires little care in the first four years and continues to yield profit for many years to come.

The tree can cope with many challenges affecting the agricultural sector today, such as a lack of groundwater, labour shortages and intensive pesticide usage. Cultivation is less labour intensive and is easily marketed via local traders.
