US: Rain causing trouble for Oregon strawberries
Oregon strawberries are hitting the shelves earlier than usual, but the recent rain is already causing them to rot.
This year marks the earliest commercial harvests of strawberries in the State since 2005.
The crop season came earlier than normal this year thanks to a warm Spring.
Growers, like Gary Duyck, who owns a farm in Cornelius, said it is not too late for this year's crop.
He said that new varieties are ripening every week, and as long as the weather dries out, the whole season won't be spoiled.
"All the rotten strawberries are at least 10 days old," Duyck said. "If we dry out, everything will come back, you see enough green, it'll come back and be pretty good."
The Oregon Department of Agriculture says Oregon strawberries brought in more than $15 million in 2012 and they expect about the same revenue this year.
