Malaysia: Huge prospects for fruit exports to China

Malaysian honey jackfruit and pineapple have huge prospects to penetrate the export markets particularly in China, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the negotiation process between the two countries at present was said to be at the final stage, since negotiations on the matter started three years ago.

"In principle, they have agreed. Just maybe more discussions such as the need to import the fruits or just the flesh..." he said.

Ismail Sabri said the national production of honey jackfruit annually was 20,000 metric tonnes while pineapple was 300,000 metric tonnes.

He believed that if the negotiations are successful, it would provide a good opportunity to fruit growers.
