The Board of directors of the cherry, plum and local Vignola fruit Consortium has recently met, and all of the members of the chain - producers, cooperatives, traders, etc - agreed on a 10 day delay of the season with respect to last year.
"Keeping the delay in mind, the year is rather poor if compared to the last one, because pollination was not effective and therefore setting was not satisfactory," explains Bernardi, who then added: "Unfortunately, there might be some other negative surprises, as we are still waiting for drops which should have occurred after the increase in temperatures."
"Despite these conditions, quality is high, especially for the most important varieties - Lapinis, Giorgia, Samba - in addition to the new early and medium ones. Therefore, even though volumes are not really high, quality should be excellent."
"At the moment I am confident that, if we will go back to a normal season, with sunshine and temperatures around 20°C, Vignola will manage to guarantee the high quality that the climate and soil characteristics of the area normally create. If the weather is good, we could recuperate a few days and start harvesting after 20th May, around the last week of the month," concludes Andrea Bernardi.
Good luck for the next sales season of Vignola cherries which can also count on the Pgi mark obtained recently.
