AU: Fruit fly control efforts extended in outbreak zones

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) has praised growers for their proactive approach to tackling Queensland fruit fly.

The time frame for control programs in outbreak areas of Sunraysia, including Barham and Tooleybuc, has been extended until May 2014.

The DEPI's Gary D'Arcy says the colder, drier weather has worked in the growers' favour to curb outbreaks.

He says the suspension zone has been extended over the winter months to end in early Spring.

"Based on the fact that we don't trap any more flies, probably October, November," he said.

"If we do trap any more flies in the suspension zone it'll be extended again.

"The eradication work will continue on and all things going to plan they'll be eradicated prior to fruit harvest."

He says fewer outbreaks means less suspension zones and more free movement in the industry.

"If you look at fly numbers that we've detected, in comparison to the last two years, the total number of outbreaks requiring eradication, it's definitely tracking in the right direction," he said.
