France: Carrefour rolls out Courses Éco Discount aisle

Carrefour is tightening its pricing strategy with plans to install its Courses Éco discount section in a number of its hypermarkets during 2013. The retailer is to introduce the Courses Éco aisle to 30 of its French hypermarkets, rolling it out in hypermarkets in less affluent areas.

The aisle's assortment is focused on low price food products, comprising of 400 SKUs. Courses Éco does not carry Carrefour's budget own label; the products carry no name brands or unknown brands.

The discount aisle was successfully trialled at Carrefour Sevran in Northeast Paris where store manager Thierry Lalo told LSA that the inclusion of Courses Éco has seen the store regain market share and lessen traffic erosion as well as enhancing the branch's price image.
