The Spanish top fruit season has started at Wilkofruit. Although volumes are still slightly smaller because of rain and cold, the prospects, according to Wilko van der Zwaard, are first class. "Yesterday we received the first Spanish white pulp mandarins. These are very nice and of a good colour."
"Some areas are later than others, because of the weather these last few weeks. In this way the season in Sevilla is two weeks late and in Murcia ten days earlier," Wilko says, who visited the production areas himself last week. "A small production area in Murcia had some problems with frost, but the quality of everything is first class."
"In Murcia there are a lot of new plantings with new varieties of nectarines and peaches, but also the blush-varieties of apricots with amongst others 'a la francaise', Mogador and the Cot-family (tomcot, sweetcot etc.). All cultivated for taste and colour," Wilko says.
"Because of the smaller supply, sizes will automatically be bigger, therefore that is an advantage," explains the importer. "Now the sun is shining in abundance and we look forward to a fruitful Spring. It has been cold for a long period, but now the consumer is ready for spring products and we definitely see the demand on the market."
Tomorrow the first Spanish apricots (Valencino variety) will arrive, followed by the Morador-blush apricots in a week's time. And later this week the first peaches arrive at Wilkofruit. A large part will be marketed under top hallmark Gaudias.
