Italy: Bad weather upsets sowing calendar

Bad weather in Italy is upsetting the agricultural calendar, as it is impeding sowing and thus affecting the campaign. As the Cia (Italian farmer confederation) reports, if this crazy rainy and cold weather doesn't give way for spring to start soon, there's a real risk of more than a 10% decrease of agricultural gross saleable production.

So far, rainfall impeded all the work needed to prepare for sowing especially in the North East, from ploughing to milling.

In addition to this, flooded and muddy soils make it impossible to use agricultural machines, and so sowing has been further delayed. "But if we shift the "standard" calendar from March to April, ripening times change and there's a risk of having weaker plants with inferior yields."

The crops which are expected to suffer the most from the delay are beetroots and corn, as well as rice, as they could produce up to 15-20% less than expected.
