The onion market is friendlier than it has been in a while. "The market is living through the farmers at the moment. The growers are really on top of things, but I am not seeing these efforts in the sales just yet," says Piet van Liere from the sorting and packing station Gebr. van Liere and export company FlevoTrade Dronten. "You lose a few days with Easter just around the corner and that is reflected in the sales."
There are strong variations in onion bale prices. "I hear that the prices vary from 11 to 16 Euro, but that does have to do with differences in quality," continues Piet. "In general, the quality is pretty standard and the onions are a lot of work. There are good groups out there but you really need to look for them. There are a lot of quality issues with the red onions but there are few in the market who are ready to take on the challenge."
Export to Russia is still at a minimum. Positive buyers include Spain, Brazil and the Far East," concludes the packager. "I see a stable market for the coming weeks. Some colleagues are extremely optimistic but I am still cautious."
