Spain: Melon planting underway
The estimated start of the greenhouse production is planned to be around May 22nd. The volumes will be restricted and the season will last for about two weeks before the open field melons season will kick in. All the melon varieties of which are being planted now.
Since March 14th, Galia, Cantaloupe, Watermelons and Yellow Melons are being planted in the open field on an almost daily basis. Due to the risk of frost during the night, a cloth that will be removed halfway through April safely covers the melons.
Though the weather is good in Murcia right now, it is noticeably slightly colder than the last few years. Despite the heavy rainfall in the beginning of March, the season seems quite promising. All the planting activities are going well and the weather conditions have improved as well (around 22 degrees by day and 8 degrees by night).
