Ecuador: Producers of citrus fruits will start exporting

A citrus processing factory, which is expected to hold northern production and promote its sale abroad, will start operating in two months.

Investors in Spain and France sponsor the close to $5 million dollar project.

The construction and commissioning of the factory was the result of a field study, which identified the need for a place to process the high production of tangerines and oranges in the states of Chone, Flavio Alfaro and El Carmen, among others.

Jaminton Intriago, Mayor of Flavio Alfaro and one of the owners of the factory, said that they were making the final adjustments to the implements responsible for processing, canning and extracting the fruit's juices to be exported to Europe.

"Everything is ready and we'll start the testing phase in the coming days so that, when everything is ready, nothing will stop work. We needed a company that added value to citrus production in Manabi," said Intriago.

The factory will employ more than 300 people, considering that the machinery is able to operate 24 hours.

The National Finance Corporation loaned the money to fund the project. "The objective is to consolidate ourselves at the national level with this innovative company and to take advantage of the production in the North," said Intriago.
