Thijs Terwindt, Wilkofruit:

EU: Extremes in the supply of Spanish strawberries

The last two weeks have been extremes in the supply of the Spanish strawberries, says Thijs Terwindt of Wilkofruit. "Two weeks ago very high prices were being made due to limited supply from the Huelva region because of rainfall. Last week there was a large supply from the region due to the good weather. Rain is expected again for next week, which makes the expected supply volumes uncertain."

"Two weeks ago we were making 2.20 to 2.30 Euro for Dutch packaging under the brand Gaudias. Our suppliers have hydroponic cultivation, in which the strawberries grow around a meter above the ground. This has enabled us to supply customers at home and abroad with good strawberries, even when there was bad weather in the production areas," says Thijs. "When the supply increased last week the prices dropped enormously. This week the prices have pulled up to a good level again. We are also receiving raspberries and we expect to start with larger volumes of blueberries in mid April."

According to the importer, there is wide demand for Spanish strawberries. "Grocers, wholesalers and supermarkets at home and abroad know where to find us for the good strawberries. We place special bags over the pallets for export, to protect the strawberries as best we can."
