India: Better mango season this year

There are expectations for a better mango season than those seen over the previous two or three years in India.

Traders are saying there is a bigger influx of fruit this year and that quality is also better than previously. Further increases in volume are anticipated from next month.

Currently Alphonso is being sold at Rs 500 to 800 per dozen at the retail end of the market. The wholesale price in the Pune market may vary from Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 per box, depending on whether the cartons contain four or eight dozens each.

In the region of 1,000 to 1,200 boxes of the variety are arriving at the markets every day.

Yogesh Desai, a mango-producer based in Ratnagiri, said, "The weather has been conducive for mango production this year. Compared to last year, the production is much better. Fruits coming in now are from the first harvest and are of good quality. The quality will improve as the arrival will increase after the first week of April. The flow of mangoes will last till May 25."

Last year the weather was not good for the production and heavy rain and sudden temperature fluctuations led to sharp drops in volume. As a result of this the prices rose very steeply, reaching Rs 800 - Rs 1,200 at retail.
