Germany: Edeka Minden-Hannover to expand

German retailer Edeka Minden-Hannover plans to expand its available Berlin-Brandenburg floor space with an additional 30,000 square feet in the next ten years, according to manager Ulrich Günther during a recent tour of logistics center Freienbrink (Oder-Spree). In both Freienbrink (Oder-Spree) and Mittenwalde (Dahme-Spree), the supermarket chain already invested 50 million Euro updating the organisation in the past two years.

Freienbrink and Mittenwalde will serve as prototypes for a completely new logistics concept, in which Edeka plans to invest over 330 million Euro. They will provide the blueprint for the planned expansion of the entire company.

Logistics center Freienbrink employs about 600 employees, Mittenwalde has 400. The storage space was expanded by a fifth to 47,000 square meters. 100 trucks annually transport 1.5 million trolleys full of food to branches in the region.
