US (OH): Green City growers cooperative blooms into hydroponic lettuce business

When shoppers at Miles Farmers Market in Solon pick up a head of “Living Lettuce,” they’ll be buying local food. Green City Growers Cooperative of Cleveland’s Central neighbourhood harvested its first crop this week, meeting a goal to grow food and create jobs.

An estimated 3 million heads will be raised in water ponds under glass each year. 25 workers start at $10 an hour and are given a chance to own part of the company.

Joe DeGaetano, Miles’ store manager, said the $2.99 Boston-style lettuce is selling better than his previous hydroponic products. Local makes the difference, he said.
