Almeria

Spain: Good quality vegetables thanks to mild winter weather

Almeria's current vegetable season is marked by good quality, as the region's mild winter weather is positively affecting plant development. "A stable winter with not much temperature variation brings the perfect conditions for our products. Their quality is outstanding this year," explains Stephan Van Marrewijk, of Vicasol's commercial department.

As for production volumes, Stephan says that ranking is topped by tomatoes. "This campaign we have harvested more kilos of tomatoes of every variety, however, cucumber and aubergine volumes have been smaller."

Taking production volumes into consideration, vegetable prices have shown good results in cucumbers, peppers and aubergines; however, "tomatoes have suffered this year because of oversupply. Prices have remained very low," affirms Stephan.

The Netherlands, which is already resuming production, still doesn't have large volumes. "This year it will take them longer to reach larger production volumes because of their harsh winter, but I don't think that will affect our exports."

Meanwhile, just like Almeria, Morocco is at the peak stage of production, which is why they are being such tough competitors, especially with tomatoes. "If they increase their production volumes, we really feel it, especially when it comes to round tomatoes," he affirms.

Based in Vícar, in the Spanish province of Almeria, Vicasol is a firm devoted to the production and commercialisation of traditional fruits and vegetables from Almeria which they ship to the main European supermarkets under the VICASOL brand. Its commercial team has great logistic efficiency, by land, sea or air. The main destinations for its products are France, England, Germany, Eastern Europe and Russia.
