AU: Pear prices plummet

Pear growers say they're leaving fruit to rot on trees, as prices plummet as low as nine cents a kilogram in some supermarkets.

Yesterday, in the Brisbane suburb of Newmarket, Coles was selling pears at that price, while others stores are selling at between 49 cents and $1.70 a kilogram.

Pear farmer Matthew Lenne, from the Goulburn Valley in Victoria, is stunned how low the prices are.

"It's a little bit unbelievable, it certainly does shock me," he said.

"There's an oversupply of pears at the moment on the market; we have a very high dollar which means we, as farmers and as processors, cannot export anything and be competitive.

"Currently we are not picking for the market. We are leaving the fruit to stay on the tree and many other growers in the Goulburn Valley area are doing the same."
