"Henk van Dongen: "Fresh Market with real authentic products"

Former Philips factory becomes Food Hall

A stone's throw from Eindhoven's city center lies an area of 27 hectares that had long been the domain of Philips and its subsidiaries. A piece of Eindhoven with a special past, still breathing the authentic industrial ambiance of an abundant industrial heritage. "This used to be called the 'forbidden city', no one was allowed in," says Nicole van Kempen, area developer at housing cooperative Trudo. This must change. Along with fresh retail, plans are being developed for an actual Food Hall.

Trudo came into contact with Henk van Dongen of fresh retail, a man not averse to unusual and surprising fresh concepts. "We have plenty of ideas, but it must also be feasible. We did some math, and the result is that we have every confidence in the project. It seems there’s even room for an additional supermarket. We are now investigating the possibilities for such an outlet.”

Van Dongen has visited many fresh markets worldwide and has plenty of ideas for the Food hall. "People need to be able to get authentic, distinctive products. Freshly baked bread, vegetables, fruit, but also meats, specialty cheeses, fresh fish, ready-made meals to take away and many exotic delicacies and unknown global products. The emphasis is on fresh."

"This spring, we’ll invite all interested parties to sniff out the idea. Then you will really see interest arise," continues Henk. "There are other cities developing the same sort of things, but that's okay. We don’t necessarily want to be the first, just accomplish something fresh and exciting! We feel the time is ripe."
