Florida and Mexico: This times it's strawberries

The Florida Strawberry Growers Association is angry that a Plant City Walmart has been selling imported strawberries from Mexico.

The association said this comes at a particularly difficult time when there is an oversupply of Florida strawberries and a 19 percent increase in the number of strawberries from Mexico. The wholesale price of Florida strawberries began the season in December at $26 per flat but has dropped to $5.90 to $6.90 per flat over the past several weeks, the Ledger said.

The acreage devoted to growing strawberries in Florida has also increased in recent years.

But Walmart said that nearly all of the strawberries sold in Florida stores since late November come from local growers.

The issue comes at a particularly sensitive time, when Florida growers have been at loggerheads with Mexican exporters over the presence of Mexican tomatoes in the US market.
