"Spain: "Baby or mini vegetables for small family units"

The brassica campaign started two weeks early in the Spanish region of Murcia and ever since, many difficulties have been experienced due to bad weather conditions. "Now strong winds are damaging the crops, which is why performance is on a downward trend," says Ian Claydon, commercial director of Kernel Export S.L.

With plantations mainly in Murcia, as well as Almeria, Alicante and Albacete, Kernel Export S.L. is devoted to the production, packing and distribution of fruits and vegetables, conventional and organic, to various European countries.

The range of vegetables includes all kinds of brassica and lettuce and to a lesser extent, baby leaf vegetables. In the summer melons are also grown.

The firm's specialties are baby or mini vegetables of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli or Roman and Graffiti cauliflower, which they produce and export in large amounts, mainly to the retail sector.

"It is a specialty with a more complex productive process. They must be harvested at the right and optimal moment. It is a product thought for small family units, as this way, much product waste is prevented. Mini vegetables are also tenderer and possess really good organoleptic qualities," he affirms.

One of the distinguishing features of Kernel Export is its wide range of organic products.

"We have basically the same range of conventional products, with brands such as Luminosa and RicaRica, and organic products, with the brand KERNELBio," points out Ian Claydon. The organic market is currently on the rise in Central and Northern Europe; however, "in Spain it is still a relatively new market, so we intend to continue developing it," he explains.

One of the ways to promote organic products in Spain is by offering a high value added. "We ship our organic products to supermarkets, but we also offer the possibility to buy them straight from our website; an on-line shop devoted exclusively to the sale of organic products in Spain."

In general, organic products have been affected by the recession in Spain, as consumers tend to seek the lowest prices. "The product is harder to grow and is more vulnerable, so the price is also a little higher. In any case, despite the recession, our company's organic market is growing," affirms Ian Claydon.

Kernel Export will attend Berlin's horticultural fair Fruit Logistica 2013, and according to Ian, it is considered a key meeting point once the campaign is well underway. "Madrid's Fruit Attraction is becoming increasingly convenient for exporters because it takes place at the start of the campaign; however, Fruit Logistica facilitates an interesting exchange of opinions with exporters and importers from all over the world, while presenting the sector's main news," he concludes.
