Alessandro Fornari (Kiwigold Consortium)

An insight into the Italian kiwifruit season

Alessandro Fornari (pictured), director of the Italian Consortium Kiwigold, has been talking about the season of kiwifruit.

"As the official figures from the CSO-Fruit Service Center of Ferrara show, in general, the lowering of stocks of kiwifruit is currently comparable to previous years, although with differences between the various regions. Like every year, sales in Europe during the first months of the campaign are affected by the presence on the market of kiwi from other origins, sometimes available at average prices lower than the Italians ones. This year the situation was most probably accentuated by the drastic reduction of total production that, consequently, has pushed up the expectations about prices."

"In this sense," continued Fornari, "the exports toward non-European markets have played an important role; there our consortium is devoting a major part of its activities, just because they are considered strategic in order to better manage the phases of stagnation in the European markets."

"In any case, the quantity in stock are in line with expectations and the general good condition of the product make us more optimistic for the second part of the season, which normally shows an increase in volumes sold just from the end of January", said Alessandro Fornari.
