Aldi ahead of Lidl in Ireland

Aldi has pulled away from Lidl, becoming the fourth largest supermarket in Ireland in terms of sales, whilst Dunnes also increased market share, becoming second largest grocery store in the county.

The latest figures reflect sales over the Christmas period.

"The strong performance of Dunnes comes after a prolonged period of under-performance, with market share hitting a low point of 21.4pc in September," said Kantar Worldpanel commercial director David Berry. "The boost in share over Christmas has regained some of this lost ground and places the retailer in a more competitive position for 2013."

Growth in the sector generally, remains subdued at 0.3%, despite food inflation running at 5%.

As people have been spending their money on items seen as essential for Christmas, such as sprouts and potatoes, there seems to have been less available for other items.

Aldi's surge allowed the company to overtake Lidl for the first time.
