Belgian and French veg growers form cooperative
On Thursday, November 29in Leuvena new "transnationalassociation of producerorganizations"for fruits and vegetableswas formed.Thenew organizationwas given thenicknameFreshcoopand brings Belgian and French growerstogether.Producers fromtwo very importanthorticulturalproduction regions,Flanders andBrittany,will join forces.Thenewtransnationalproducer organizationrepresents 4Flemish and 7French producerorganizations,which together account fornearly6,900growers anda total value ofmarketed productionofover 900million Euro.In this new organizationtwo large,well-known labelscome together:Flandria andPrincede Bretagne.Meanwhile,it was announcedthatproducerorganizations froma number ofotherMember Statesmay be ultimatelyinterested in joining.

Flemish Minister-President Peeterssees the roleof thenewly establishedtransnational producerorganization, whichhaschosen to be based inFlanders,as apilot anddemonstration projectof transnational cooperationon sucha large scale.Forsuch partnershipsin the futuretoget off the ground,a number ofobstaclesat Europeanlevelstill need tobe eliminated,includingthe officialrecognition ofsuch organizations.ThereforeMinister-President Peetersasks theEuropeanCommission-with high priority and in the short term-to clarifythe financialresponsibilitieswiththe recognitionof producerorganizations ofsuch magnitudeinvolved."It cannot of coursebe thatall responsibilitiesare only placedintheareain which recognition issought," saidthe Prime Minister.
"The horticulture sectorisa veryimportant sectorfor Flanders.Exportwise, weare the leaders in variousproducts,since formanyproductsmore than halfofthefruit and vegetableproduction is exported.Therefore,internationalcooperationwithin the framework ofour visionofthedevelopment of the sectoris veryimportant andwe welcomeinitiativeswhich could contributeto it," addedMinister-President KrisPeeters.
