In 2012, 315,500 tonnes of potatoes were harvested from an area of around 8,600 hectares in the German state of Brandenburg. That is 12 percent less than in 2011, when the potato harvest amounted to 357,100 tonnes.
The potato yield came to 36,900 kg per hectare, according to information from the "Amt für Statistik Berlin-Brandenburg". This put the yield per hectare 3 percent lower than in 2011, but still 4,670 kg per hectare above the long term average (2006 to 2011).
A major reason for a smaller harvest compared to 2011 was a severe drought during the period of tuber onset. The partly persistent wet weather during summer also meant that the growers were faced with blight in their fields. The cultivation area also dropped by 9 percent compared to last year (2011: 9,400 hectares).
