AU: Fruit fly station opens early

The quarantine station in Pinnaroo will be opened one month early after warnings of increased fruit fly risk in South Australia.

The station was originally expected to open at the beginning of December, but will now open this month as Biosecurity SA increases vigilance against the entry of fruit fly from the eastern states.

Geoff Raven from Biosecurity SA says it is one of a number of measures it is taking to ensure South Australia remains fruit fly-free.

"We are aware that there are still many, many fruit fly outbreaks in the production areas in Victoria and New South Wales, so given that those areas are in outbreak mode, we think that there's a heightened risk of infested fruit," he said.

"We're also upping the ante in terms of random roadblocks, so we'll see an increase in those over the next six or eight months to measure whether we've got the appropriate controls in place, whether the message to travellers, of not taking fruit and vegetables across state borders, is actually hitting the mark."
