The main cauliflower producers in Europe are France, Italy and northern Spain, although in the winter, due to adverse weather conditions in those areas, Murcia is able to supply its cauliflowers to the rest of Europe."The cauliflower production volumes in Murcia are mostly scheduled beforehand to meet clients' needs. For this season the volumes are not expected to rise compared to last year, which was a difficult one," says Jesús Abenza, from the firm Alimer.
The floods occurred in Murcia a few weeks ago affected many crops in Lorca, although not significantly in the case of cauliflowers, as this is not an important production area within Murcia as a whole.
"The floods have caused the loss of 20% of the cauliflower harvest, which we believe will not really affect the market; in the case of iceberg lettuce, however, the destruction of the crops is bound to have an impact on this product's supply," affirms Abenza.
"What marks a good or a bad year is the weather, which can cause the production to be ready in stages, all at once, or to fail altogether," he points out.
In general, for many vegetables, Murcia becomes a relevant supplier in the winter due to privileged weather conditions, "although cauliflowers resist cold weather pretty well. Consequently, during some winter periods, France and Italy can still be tough competitors for us," says Abenza.
