UK: Middle class shop increasing in Aldi and Lidl

Recent surveys seem to indicate that the affluent are being hit by continued economic difficulties. A third of high earners say they now shop in discount brand supermarkets, such as Aldi and Lidl.

It is thought that around 32% of middle class, mortgage free people, in their 50s and 60s are turning to lower cost supermarkets.

Around 30% have also switched to own label brands, the survey by Axa Big Money Index revealed.

Hard-pressed families have seen their incomes squeezed in recent months, as rising fuel, energy and mortgage costs are crippling disposable incomes, while salaries do not rise enough to keep up with over-inflated prices.
