Indonesia: 7-Eleven continuing expansion

The 7-Eleven chain has said it plans to continue expanding in Indonesia, and will look to add 60 new outlets by end-2012 itself. The group currently operates 57 stores in the country, and said it will focus on expanding in the capital, which it termed its "biggest market at the moment."

The local 7-Eleven stores are operated by franchise Modern Internasional, and the firm said it is sticking by its expansion plans despite an expected new government rule that will limit franchise operations. The rule will seek to limit the number of company-owned units each franchisor operates to just 100 outlets, in an effort to boost franchise ownership.

Modern said it will comply with the new rule, despite going beyond the 100-store limit, claiming it will let "third-party franchisors" operate some of them. The store openings this year are expected to cost around $18m, excluding rent.
