AU: Woolworths defends domestic produce record

Woolworths has defended itself against claims that it favours cheap imports for its home label brand.

Consumer group Choice says both Coles and Woolworths are increasingly stocking vegetables grown and packaged overseas.

It surveyed private label brands and found that 38% of Woolworths and 55% of Coles, goods were produced in Australia.

But Woolworths general manager of fresh foods, Pat McEntee, says two-thirds of the company's processed foods are sourced locally.

"70 per cent of our own brand products are manufactured here in Australia," he said.

"And we're working very hard to increase the amount of Australian grown and manufactured products within our own categories."
