Philippines may import more US vegetables

The Philippines government is working on an agreement to increase the importation of vegetables from the US, the Bureau of Plant Industry has reported.

"We still have to finalize the exact volume the Philippine market can tolerate so far as the increase in the volume of US vegetable is concerned," said BPI Director Clarita Barron.

Currently she said one import permit can only bring on 250 kg of imported vegetables. The USDA can propose volumes, but in the end the decision is with the Philippines Department of Agriculture.

Before drafting the final work plan for the agreement, the bureau has to complete its pest risk analysis (PRA) of the vegetables it plans to import.

She confirmed that the agreement on increasing vegetable imports is in no way linked to the country's attempts to increase exports of bananas to the US.
