Fiji: Alert over papaya disease

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji is calling on people to contact them if they see any sign of disease in papaya plants.

This is after the organisation identified several cases of disease in both commercial and domestic plantations recently.

Authority Chief Executive Elvis Silvestrini says a team from BAF and the Department of Agriculture visited some papaya farms in Sigatoka after requests were made.

Samples have since been sent for laboratory testing in New Zealand.

The symptoms of the disease are yellow leaves that are rotting along the edge, wet areas at the base of the leaf stalk, crown and leaf mid ribs as well as an unpleasant odour emanating from infected fruits and plant parts.
