Canada: Low prices another blow for cherry growers

If the weather damage to what could have been a bumper crop wasn't bad enough, now cherry prices have plummeted.

BC Fruit Growers Association director Nirmal Dhaliwal says prices for cherries have dropped from a high of 70 cents per pound to as little as 40 cents per pound.

He says this is below the cost growers pay to harvest the fruit - around 50 cent per pound - and predicts most growers will just leave their crop to rot on the ground.

He also says this is the toughest blow the cherry sector has faced in over 20 years.
