Sri Lanka unveils fruit plan

Sri Lanka has unveiled an ambitious plan to promote the cultivation of fruit, in a bid to lessen reliance on imports and increase exports.

The plan will be implemented soon and will see the distribution of 7 million fruit trees across the island.

The Ministry of Agriculture is also going to be providing training to those interested in taking up growing fruit on a commercial level. They will also be provided with 100,000 rupees ($750 US) to purchase start up equipment.

The Ministry says that fruit trees that have export potential will receive priority, such as pineapple, banana, grapes, citrus and others.
