Wim de Graaf, Amsterdamse Fruithandel:

"Watermelon "hot item because of good weather"

From various destinations summer fruit arrives again. "Great when the season starts again" Wim de Graaf of Amsterdamse Fruithandel tells enthusiastically. We, in the sector, I think are all happy that the summer season has started again after the difficult period last year. Because of the nice weather people are happier and buy their products quicker. It is the same with our customers, the shopkeepers.

According to the trader prices of the stone fruit are 'reasonably' high and the summer fruit sells well. "Not exaggerated, but reasonable prices for most of the fruit." He mentions, that the supply of stone fruit, such as nectarines, peaches, plums and cherries is still limited. "This is mainly the result of the bad weather in Greece and the south of France. Only limited volumes come from these countries."

Wim is especially happy about the sale of watermelons. "The are really hot at the moment. We are in a change-over season of 'common' melons. There are still some South American and Spain has only just started." Already since 1957 the Amsterdamse Fruithandel have specialised in nice and fresh fruit.

Would you say that at present the customer does not spend as easily when fruit and vegetables are concerned? "It is a fact that the consumer will rather spend
8 euro than 10 euro now. And when everything is rather pricey then we notice that and is the volume sold less. But in general in our branch we need volume in order to make some money, as otherwise the product becomes too expensive. The best way is to strike a happy medium. Nevertheless it is really striking to see that prices abroad are higher than in our shops."
