France: Study of trade and consumption of peaches and nectarines

At the request of AOP peaches and nectarines the Ctifl (Interprofessional Technical centre of fruit and vegetables) have researched the question of the demand for peaches and nectarines on the French market. The stone fruit sector is involved in the crisis and the clearly present foreign competition. As a result it is for various chains difficult to appreciate these products and they have lost quite some market share in the course of the last few years. It is hoped that a new system may be found through this research, so that new appreciation can be given to peaches and nectarines.

The study consists of two parts. The first part looks at operators. This analysis is founded on discussions with various people within the sector. Central in these discussions was the difference between the French and Spanish peaches and nectarines, the vision of the distributors in connection with the future position of the French supply, suggestions to win parts of the market back from Spain, an analysis of logistics and supply and expectations regarding product and service innovation. This analysis has been supplemented with observations and an analysis of known statistics (from customs and Kantar Worldpanel).

The second part of the study is about the purchasing power and the expectations of the consumer. These data were compared with the results from 1994 and 2002. Ctifi held an inquiry in September 2011 amongst 1000 people belonging to the French population and older than 14 years of age. The questionnaire with amongst others questions about buying habits and eating of peaches and nectarines was the same as in other years. Only some of the questions about the production were expanded.

The peach in general, both by the consumer and the distribution, was regarded as negative because of the inconsistent quality. Also a price war has a negative influence on the peach. It is clear from the study that the consumer is of the opinion that local products are proof of good quality and taste. It looks like that when more varieties and a slightly riper fruit is offered and when the French supply is in an easier way available to the French consumer, the French peach and nectarine will be appreciated more and will be in a stronger competitive position with regard to Spain.

The study is available from Ctifi for 30 euro plus 4 euro mailing costs.
