New harvest Egyptian red onions at Gourmet

Shallot and onion grower Gourmet received the first Egyptian red onions to-day. Both conventional and organic red onions are available from today. This is a few weeks earlier than the traditional harvest areas. For over than 10 years Gourmet has gained experience with the cultivation and import from Egypt. The total process is controlled by them in order to be able to guarantee a good quality.

The selected seeds are being disinfected and the virgin sandy soil tested before starting the cultivation. Because of this the chance of sickness or blackmould is limited. Many sicknesses are the result of stress in the onion plant, therefore drip irrigation was chosen instead of the traditional way. The onion receives the correct quantity of liquid in this way, never too much or too little.

The member growers of Gourmet are GlobalGap and Nature's Choice certified. They are exclusive growers of the variety Italian Dark Red, which results in a red onion with a nice deep red colour.

During the growing season the cultivation assistants of Gourmet regularly visit the fields. The growers are assisted from start to finish, at harvest time. After the harvest the onions are transported under conditioned circumstances in sea-going containers. Changes in temperature are prevented to keep the onions in rest. On arrival in the Netherlands the onions are selected and sorted at Gourmet.
A correct measure is guaranteed in this way.

Orders are packed daily in order not only to guarantee the size but also the quality.
