India: Veg prices tumble as fruit soars

In Madhya Pradesh vegetables prices have at last begun to fall. However, now it is fruit prices that are on the rise and becoming unaffordable.

Prices are rising rapidly for fruits such as mango, banana, apple, grapes and orange. Even the Sinduri mango, which is reckoned to be the least popular variety, is retailing for Rs60 per kg ($1.17 US), whilst apples are selling at twice this price. Pomegranates are slightly cheaper than apples and are selling for Rs 100 per kg.

Seasonal fruits such as watermelon and papaya are selling at reasonable rates still. Watermelons, for example, are selling for Rs 15 per kg. Papaya is likewise affordable at Rs 20 per kg.

It is thought that vegetables have reached the bottom now and no further price decline is anticipated.
