Jersey: Waitrose to open Good Friday for first time
Last year the States of Jersey gave parish constables discretion over shops trading on bank holidays.
Waitrose said it had asked to open after calls from customers.
But the Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend Bob Key, said opening on Good Friday was a part of English culture Jersey could do without.
He said: "In what is a Christian island with Christian culture, with the symbols of the saints on every road sign as you go around, it is part of our heritage.
"I know they open in England but it is a bit of English culture we could well do without."
The assistant economic development minister, Constable Len Norman, said the changes in the law were not that significant.
