US (ID): Schools invited to fresh produce program

Superintendent of Public instruction Tom Luna has announced open season for applications from Idaho elementary schools to implement the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

"More than 100 Idaho schools have participated in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and found it is a great way to promote healthier eating habits among Idaho students during the school day," Superintendent Luna said.

The program aims to increase student's consumption of fresh foods and to expand the variety of fruits that they eat. Schools participating in the program are required to offer children free access to fresh food snacks throughout the day.

Schools applying to take part in the program will receive priority based upon free and reduced price enrolment, during the selection process.
