US: Arysta LifeScience pull methyl iodide from market

Tokyo based Arysta LifeScience, one of the largest pesticide producers globally, has finally brought settlement to the ongoing controversy surrounding use of methyl iodide in fumigant treatments - it has announced its intention to pull its Midas range of fumigants from the US market.

There has long been controversy over usage of methyl iodide, which the Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges can cause irritation to skin and lungs, kidney problems and depression of the nervous system with over exposure. However, the EPA stops short of recognising methyl iodide as a carcinogen, despite calls from environmentalists. The claim comes as a result of exposure to the chemical was shown to cause tumours in laboratory mice and rats.

Protests against use of the fumigant ingredient have been forthcoming since it was approved in 2007. Scientists have been amongst those who have voiced their concerns over the years.

Arysta LifeScience has stated that its decision is based on maintaining economic viability in the US.

Recently officials in California and the California Strawberry Commission began working together, with 1 $500,000 research budget courtesy of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, to find alternatives to methyl iodide.
