But the balance falls of 16.2%

Italian fruit and vegetable trade balance remains active in 2011

According to Fruitimprese, the balance of fruit and vegetable trade in 2011 was slightly below the billion Euro, with a decrease of 16.2% compared to 2010.

Exports have declined in both volume (-1.4%) and value (-2.3%) but still they related to the mid-year’s expectation; a slight increase is registered in importing volumes (+0.4%) while financial performance was (+3.7%).

Altogether, in 2011 Italy exported over 4 million tons for approximately 3.8 billion Euro. Both in volume and in value, there has been an increase of exports for fresh fruit (respectively +4.3% and +3%) and dried fruit (+0.1% and +4.3%) while figures for vegetables were negative (-9.8% in volume and -9.4% in value) and citrus (-11.8% in volume and -12.6% in value).

Concerning the overall level of imports, Italy has imported approximately 3.13 million tons of fruit and vegetables for a value of 2.8 billion Euro.

Among individual sectors, increases in volume for citrus (+23.4%) and fresh fruit (+1.5%); for others a negative performance: vegetables (-4.4%), dried fruits (+4.2%) and tropical fruit (-0.1%). A positive value for all sectors except vegetables (-1.2%).
