Zimbabwe: Repeated watermelon theft leads grower to take own life

The continued theft of watermelons has led to tragedy in Dendele. An 84 year old farmer who had endured repeated thefts of his fruits took his own life in distress at the situation.

Police investigations reveal that he spent the day complaining to his wife about the continued theft of watermelons in his field. Later that day he went home early and left his wife to continue with the weeding. He took his own life.

Police officer commanding Beitbridge district Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo said "as police we want to urge people to always engage the services of a counsellor or a third party when they are faced with problem rather than taking their own lives. Some of these incidents are preventable and it is worrying that we continue to lose more lives through suicide," he said.
