India: Dutch apple investment proving fruitful

Despite stiff competition from other districts, there is growing demand for apples from the Uttarakhandi region. Particularly for varieties such as royal delicious and red delicious.

Fortunately growers in the area are able to cash in on the demand, thanks to the installation, last September, of a piece of Dutch technology.

The Control Atmosphere Storage (CAS), which regulates oxygen and temperature levels, is then only exclusively apple storage facility in the area. It was installed last year thanks to a joint investment from two Dutch organisations - Stichting Het Groene Woudt and Fresh Food Technology, at a cost of Rs 15.5 crore.

The project is being operated on a not for profit basis and all shares will be transferred upon the cost of the machinery being recouped.
