Rob Kuijper:

"EU: "Good expectations for Costa Rican melon season"

Herman Kuijper Ltd has been a big player in the import of melons to the Netherlands from Costa Rica for years. Herman Kuijper's melons are sold all over the European mainland. The melons are sold under the brand Caribe. Last week the first yellow melons arrived at the importers.

"The first melons looked good, with a good brix and not much skin damage. So it looks promising", says Rob Kuijper. The importer himself expects to import a comparable volume to last year. Overall he expects there to be a larger volume than last year. "The supply of watermelon from Panama has also started earlier than last year."

The demand for melons is calm at the moment. "Last week most customers were at Fruit Logistica. Everyone still has to recover from the cold temperatures", explains Rob . "But I expect the demand to pull up soon. The prices are at a reasonable level."
